Travel Beaumont, Texas and Lafayette, Louisiana: the Unexpected

Our next travel stops were a blend of the Beaumont area of Texas and Lafayette, Louisiana. It was a whirlwind of natural beauty, rich history, and cultural surprises. We packed a lot into a short time, and both regions left us with unforgettable memories. This region of Texas felt warm and familiar even though it was new to us, like slipping into a favorite pair of cowboy boots. Louisiana dazzled us with its deep, unique cultural roots and unmistakeable charm. Here’s a snapshot of this journey of the unexpected.

Beaumont, Texas: Familiar Comforts with a Side of History

Here’s what we loved:

  • Village Creek State Park: We spent the daytime hiking and the evenings by the campfire under a starry Texas sky in this small but charming park.
  • Spindletop-Gladys City Boomtown Museum: This historic site brought the Texas oil boom to life. The term “gusher” was born here when the Lucas Gusher erupted in 1901, transforming the oil industry. Companies like Texaco, Gulf Oil, and ExxonMobil trace their roots to this very spot.
  • Big Thicket National Preserve: Known as the “Biological Crossroads of North America,” this preserve is a unique blend of ecosystems—swamps, forests, and prairies all in one place. We enjoyed a hike under the pines and agree it’s a must-visit for nature lovers.
  • Scenic Coastal Drive: We cruised along the Gulf Coast, soaking in the natural beauty of Sea Rim State Park’s marshes and beaches. The drive also offered a glimpse into the industrial side of the coast, with Port Arthur’s massive oil refineries—a striking contrast we found fascinating to see in person.
  • Nederland Windmill: This charming nod to the area’s Dutch heritage was a quick, delightful stop. The windmill stands proudly as a symbol of local history.
  • Modern Pumpjack: Seeing a working oil pumpjack up close is quintessential Texas and tied the region’s past and present together.

The last Texas leg of our trip felt like home, even though it was our first time in this area. The state parks and oil history gave it that classic Texas vibe we adore, but it was now time to explore outside of our comfort zone!

Louisiana: A Cultural and Natural Revelation

Crossing into Louisiana was like stepping into a whole new world. We expected great food (and got it!), but the region’s unique culture, agriculture, and landscapes impressed us at every turn. Here’s what stood out:

  • Agriculture: Rice, Crawfish, & Sugarcane: We were fascinated by the dual-purpose fields where rice and crawfish are farmed together—a brilliant, sustainable practice unique to this region. Louisiana surprised us with its thriving rice and sugarcane industries.
  • Giant Palmettos, Southern Live Oaks, & Spanish Moss: The massive, tropical-looking palmettos under the majestic live oaks draped in Spanish moss added an almost prehistoric vibe to the landscape. The beauty was unlike anything we’ve seen elsewhere.
  • Acadian Village: This living history museum in Lafayette taught us about the Acadians, French settlers exiled from Canada in the 1700s. Their resilient culture gave rise to the term “Cajun,” and we were captivated by this lesser-known history.
  • Cajun Food: From gumbo to boudin, we sampled the region’s iconic dishes. Stay tuned for a separate post diving into the delicious details!
  • Vermilion Parish Courthouse: The stunning architecture of this historic courthouse in Abbeville was a highlight, blending French and Southern styles beautifully.
  • Avery Island Tabasco Factory: A day trip to see where Tabasco sauce is made was a spicy treat. We’ll share more in a dedicated post soon!

Lafayette and its surroundings were a revelation. While New Orleans often steals the spotlight, this area’s unique blend of Cajun culture, agriculture, and natural beauty makes it a must-visit.
